NYC MARATHON 2009 : The New York City Marathon The New York City Marathon (ING New York City Marathon for sponsorship reasons) is a major annual marathon (42.195 km (26.219 mi)) whose course runs through all five boroughs of New York City. It is one of the largest marathons in the world, with 37,850 finishers in 2006.[1] Along with the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon, it is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is one of the World Marathon Majors. In 2008, the race initiated a corral system. After the elite women started, the balance of the runners began in three staggered starts to reduce congestion. The official times are those recorded by a computer chip worn on the shoe, which calculates when a runner crosses the start and when she crosses the finish, known as "net," as opposed to "gun," time. Runners also pass timing mats along the course and email notifications can be received by people following runners during the race to see how the runners are doing. THE 27th KOREAN HARVEST FESTIVAL : For those of you that don’t know, Chuseok is a major three-day harvest festival and holiday celebrated in the autumn every eighth month of the lunar calendar (which starts in the Gregorian calendar’s “February”). On these three days, Koreans visit their hometowns to pay respects to their ancestors, give offerings and ultimately have a huge feast of traditional Korean foods. For non-Koreans, it’s a great time to sample a literal taste of Korean culture. The 27th Korean Harvest & Folk / Chuseok Festival September 26-7 Citi Field Stadium 126th St. and Roosevelt Ave Flushing, New York Performances by: Brown Eyed Girls, Yang Hye Sung, Leessang, Wax, Im Ju Ri, Jo Seong Ja Since 1982, The Korean Produce Association has organized the Korean Harvest & Folk Festival. The "Relay for Life" lasted all night long, and was accompanied by many other activities. One very special musical group was the "Crossfire Steel Orchestra" directed by Martin Douglas. "Relay For Life is the signature activity of the American Cancer Society. More than 5,000 events take place nationwide, and now, even around the world in countries like Singapore and Australia. With the help of people like you, Relay For Life has become the largest activity of its kind in the country. But more than a fundraiser, Relay For Life is: A cancer survivor event-within-an-event. At every Relay For Life, cancer survivors are honored for their courage and strength by beginning the event with an honorary lap. ASTORIA CIVIC ASSOCIATION and COUNCIL MEMBER PETER F. VALLONE JR. BICYCLE RACE : "Astoria Civic Association Bike Race Has 80 Winners More than 200 children, between three and 11 years old participated in separate races according to age in the Astoria Civic Association 29th Annual Bike Race in Astoria Park on May 17. The race event started with the youngest group peddling down Shore Boulevard, some on tricycles, others using training wheels. The top five finishers in each of the 16 separate age categories received a trophy and all participants received a medal as a memento of their efforts. Sponsors included City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr., Con Edison, TD Bank, US Powergen (Astoria Generating Station), Empire Office and the Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens."
